From neighborhood candy to beloved legacy brands, what can candy tell us about Baltimore’s changing industry and its consumers? This installment of Industry Social Club explores the evolution of Baltimore’s candy and confectionery industry, from the longstanding companies and products that are part of Baltimore’s cultural memory to the makers and businesses shaping its future. The conversation will explore how nostalgia, memory, and brand loyalty influence what we buy and why certain products become part of our traditions. It will also look behind the scenes at the journey from ingredients to finished products, examining manufacturing processes, ingredient sourcing, workforce, and the many steps involved in bringing candy to the community. Finally, the discussion will consider how changing consumer values are reshaping the food industry, including the growing interest in shopping local, expectations around pricing and sourcing, and the role of brand reputation in what consumers choose to support.
