Step into the rich history and artistry of Freedom Quilts.

In this engaging hands-on workshop exploring the powerful stories, symbols, and traditions connected to the Underground Railroad. Participants will learn about the meanings behind traditional quilt blocks and how quilts were believed to communicate messages of hope, safety, direction, and freedom.During this interactive session, we’ll discuss the cultural significance of quilting within African American history while creating our own symbolic quilt-inspired block using fusible adhesive techniques and simple hand stitching. No quilting experience is needed — just a willingness to learn, create, and connect through fabric and storytelling.

Participants Will:

    • Learn the history and symbolism of Freedom Quilts
    • Explore traditional quilt block meanings
    • Create a symbolic fabric block using fusible applique
    • Learn a beginner-friendly hand sewing technique
    • Reflect on storytelling, creativity, and community through quilting
Perfect for beginners, history lovers, creatives, educators, and anyone interested in textile traditions and cultural storytelling.
 
This workshop takes place in conjunction with the Freedom Liberation Fest hosted by BLK ASS FLEA MKT on June 19 from 12pm to 6pm at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. This is not a BMI program. 

Cecily Habimana is the co-owner of Sew Creative Lounge in Lanham, Maryland, where she and her business partner Tisha Thorne have built a vibrant sewing and quilting community for creatives of all ages. Inspired by watching her mother sew as a child, Cecily developed a lifelong love for fabric, creativity, and cultural storytelling through textiles. Her work has been featured in publications and media outlets including The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, NPR, Fox 5 News, and Voice of America. Cecily holds degrees from Howard University and George Washington University and currently serves as a commissioner for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
