A Baltimore Revolution in Every Line
Before digital screens and high-speed home printers, the world was built on hot lead and mechanical genius. Invented right here in Baltimore by Ottmar Mergenthaler, the Linotype was once dubbed “the eighth wonder of the world” by Thomas Edison for its ability to cast entire lines of metal type in seconds.
Our very own 1936 Model 8 Linotype, affectionately known as Linus, has reached a monumental milestone: 90 years of “mechanical marvel”. While many machines of its era have been retired to the scrap heap, Linus continues to dazzle visitors in the BMI Print Shop, casting history every Saturday thanks to the dedication of our volunteer operators.
