Baltimore Museum Of Industry

Volunteer Opportunities

Go Behind the Scenes at the BMI!

Volunteer

We welcome volunteers interested in preserving Maryland's industrial and technological heritage and its people. Volunteers gain useful skills, free membership to the museum and the ability to educate the public about Baltimore history and culture. From college interns to retired workers to groups of business volunteers, people of all walks of life are encouraged to join us in the following capacities:

Administration: Learn how a museum operates by supporting the staff with a variety of office duties. Interns welcome!

Collections & Research: Go behind the scenes to work with the BMI's Collections & Research Director to process archival and artifact collections, research for new exhibitions, and inventory collections.

WorkerDocents: Guide visitors on public tours and help bring smiles to students through our award-winning school programs.

Events: Love a good party? Help us to plan, market and implement our events as a committee member or day-of volunteer.

Facilities: Maintain the BMI's 6+-acre waterfront campus by gardening and other special projects throughout the seasons. Great opportunity for groups of volunteers!

Volunteer

Front Desk: Be the first face our visitors see at the BMI! Volunteers are needed to staff the front desk. Mondays-Fridays,10am-5pm. Responsibilities include welcoming groups, answering the phone, and performing light clerical duties.

Marketing: Publicize upcoming events and special exhibits. Volunteers can also help at special events, spread the word at community festivals or write articles for our newsletter.

Membership: Help us to plan fun ways to serve our current members and develop innovative ways to reach new members.

Preservation: Utilize or expand your skills to preserve the BMI's many objects and exhibits. Our crews maintain everything from our working machine shop to the Kids' Assembly Line.
