Goal

        The goal of the Engineering Challenges™ is to introduce children and youth to the role and lifestyle of the engineer in today’s society, and assist schools and community education groups in developing technologically literate citizens of the future.

Objectives

The objectives of the Engineering Challenges™ are to:

  • introduce children and youth to the role and lifestyle of the engineer in today’s society,
  • connect what children and youth experience through school and community learning experiences to “real world” engineering problem solving activities,
  • encourage children and youth to participate in STEM focused educational experiences,
  • motivate children and youth to consider career opportunities in STEM career areas in Maryland.

Each Challenge involves four main components:

  • the design and construction of the Challenge project;
  • a written report (submitted prior to the competition);
  • an oral report (completed at the competition); and
  • the performance of the project in the Challenge competition.

Who can participate?

Although most entries come from public and private schools, we also welcome entries from home school groups, clubs of all kinds—including Scout groups—even individual families or groups of friends.
